Nepal start T20 Qualifiers with a win over Oman
Nepal clinched a convincing victory over Oman in the first match of ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier A riding back on a excellent bowling by skipper Sandeep Lamichhane, Dipendra Singh Airee and Kamal Singh Airee.
Despite a poor batting performance, Nepal made a strong start to the ICC T20 World Cup with a 39-run victory over Oman. At the same time, Nepal, with a win in very first match, has strengthened its chances of playing in the semi-finals finishing the group stage in top two.
Chasing a modest winning target of 118, Oman were all out for 78 in 17 overs. Oman wicketkeeper Nasim Shukhi top scored with 24 runs. Fast bowler Kamal Singh Airee got the better of opener Kashyap Prajapati in the third ball of the first over. In the fifth ball of the second over, Jitendra Mukhiya got Ayan Khan for 3 as wicketkeeper Asif Sheikh took the catch to give Nepal a great start.
In the second ball of the sixth over, Dipendra made an excellent run out of Oman's premier batsman Jitender Singh in mid-off. Nepal kept picking up wickets regulary afterwards. Sandeep Lamichhane bowled Khawar Ali for 7 in the fourth ball of the seventh over as Oman were struggling at 31-4.

Captain Jeeshan Maqsood tried a big shot in the fifth ball of the eighth over off Dipendra Singh Airee only to get caught by Kushal Bhurtel for 2 runs. Shoaib Khan was caught by Asif Sheikh off Abhinash Bohara for 1 to worsen the things for the home side at 35-6 in 8.5 overs. In the second ball of the 11th over by Abhinash Bohara, Asif dropped a simple catch of wicketkeeper Nasim Khushi for 2 runs.
Earlier, after losing the toss at Al Amaret Cricket Ground-1 in Muscat, Nepal finished on 117/8 from allotted 20 overs. Nepal's Arif Sheikh top-scored with 38 off 37 balls with two fours. Captain Sandeep Lamichhane remained unbeaten on 16 off 7 balls with 1 four and 1 six.
Nepal's openers Asif Sheikh and Kushal Bhurtel were out cheaply. Nepal had lost both the openers with only 12 runs on the board. Gyanendra Malla (15), Dipendra Singh Airee (11) and Lokesh Bam (16) tried their best to score runs but the real impactful innings came from the bat of Aarif Sheikh. Aarif faced 37 deliveries to score 38 runs which included 2 fours.
Nepal will face Philippines in their second match on Saturday. Nepal is accompanied by Canada, Oman and Philippines in the Group B of the qualifiers while Ireland, UAE, Bahrain and Germany are battling out in Group A. Top two teams from each group will play the semifinals and the two finalist will secure a place int he T20 World cup to be held in Australia in upcoming November.
