Gujarat complete third consecutive win with Tewatia's late charges
Match Summary :
Gujarat Titans 190 for 4 (Gill 96, Sai Sudharsan 35, Rabada 2-35)
Punjab Kings 189 for 9 (Livingstone 64, Dhawan 35, Rashid 3-22)
by 6 wickets
Gujarat Titans completed their third consecutive win of the season as they defeated Punjab Kings by 6 wickets on Friday. Gujarat required 12 runs from last two balls as Tewatia blasted Odean Smith for two consecutive sixes to take his team over victory line.
In 2020, Tewatia had scored 5 consecutive sixes playing for Rajasthan Royals.
Earlier, Punjab had posted 189/9 in their first innings. Liam Livingstone blasted 64 runs off just 27 balls which included 7 fours and 4 sixes. Shikhar Dhawan made 35 while Jitesh Sharma scored 23 runs for Punjab. Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat as he finished with the figures of 3-22 from his quota of 4 overs.
For a large part of the Gujarat chase, they looked well in control thanks to a 100-runs 2nd wicket partnership between Shubman Gill and debutant Sai Sudharsan. Gill, who eventually was dismissed for 96 off 59 balls, and Sudharsan kept Gujarat up with the required rate while keeping their wickets intact.
However, Punjab bowlers, especially the impressive Arshdeep, pushed Punjab’s noses ahead with some excellent bowling in the last 5 overs. Once Gill succumbed under pressure in the 19th over followed by Pandya’s run out in the next, it looked all over for Gujarat.
With victory in sight, Caribbean all-rounder Smith had a 3 balls spell he would quickly like to forget. Defending 13 off 3, Smith first needlessly conceded an overthrow when there was no run available, bringing Tewatia on strike. What followed was something that is becoming a very familiar sight for Punjab, Tewatia hitting their Caribbean fast bowlers for sixes.
