Winner Prediction for IPL's El Classico : Mumbai vs Chennai

All eyes will be now on Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium as the arch rivals Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will face each others in the first qualifier of the ongoing VIVO Indian Premier League 2019. The Mumbai-Chennai rivalry is now being compared to the Madrid-Barca rivalry in the Spanish league and termed as El Classico.

  • Mumbai is the only team to have a positive head-to-head record against Chennai
  • Mumbai had defeated Chennai in both matches this season
  • In the last 23 matches at home, Chennai have won 19 matches
  • In 6 IPL matches, Mumbai have defeated CSK 4 times at Cheupak
  • 3 of Chennai's last 4 defeats at the MA Chidambaram Stadium have come against Mumbai

Match Prediction :

The above mentioned stats and current form are in favor of Mumbai. Mumbai is the only team to have better head to head record against Chennai. Despite the match being played at Chennai's home ground, I would give 60-40 in favor of Mumbai for this first qualifier.

Chennai has good bowling attack. Imran Tahir and Harbhajan Singh can be dangerous at Chennai's pitch but Mumbai's bowling is one of the strongest in this season. Another worry for Chennai can be their inconsistent batting this season. Watson hasn't been in his prime while Faf has been doing decently. Suresh Raina has been inconsistent while Kedar Jadhav, Dwayne Bravo and Ambati Rayudu hasn't lived up to the expectation so far. MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja have done a decent job in limited chances they have got.

Mumbai on the other hand have played a good brand of cricket as a team. Quinton de Kock has been very good at the top of the order. Rohit Sharma has shown some glimpses of his class in the last game against KKR as he scored half century. Surya Kumar Yadav at number 3 hasn't played long inning but manages 30s/40s consistently. The finishers in the name of Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya and Hardik Pandya hold the key for Mumbai's batting. Hardik in particular has been exceptional. Hardik's tremendous six hitting capabilities has won a number of matches for Mumbai and he has been delivering in death overs in almost all games he has played.

Mumbai's bowling looks brilliant with death over specialists Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga. Mitchell McClenegan bowled well in the last game against KKR. Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar are doing good job as far as the spin department is concerned.
