Binod Das: Greatness of the Legend
Binod Das, I can’t be wrong saying him “The first Cricket Star of Nepal”. There are very few cricketers who are known for their excellence around and Binod Das takes the lead. Who does not have a dream wearing the national jersey? Binod did put on the jersey with passion, led the country and earns the legendary status in Nepali Cricket. His immense success in cricket makes him the true sporting star for his beautiful mountainous nation. Das captained Nepal’s senior team from 2005-2008 before he handed over the baton to current skipper Paras Khadka in 2009.
Binod Das was born in 1983, in Kalaiya of Bara District. He first played for Nepal in U-19 level, playing in the 2000 U-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka. Binod played the ICC U-17 Asia Cup in Pakistan later in the year, before making his debut for the senior side in that years ACC Trophy in the United Arab Emirates with his first game at Sharjhan.After 2001 ICC Trophy in Ontario, he returned to the U-19 team for the 2002 U-19 World Cup in New Zealand. Later he played in the ACC Trophy in Singapore that July. He had his first-class debut in March 2004 when he played for Nepal against the UAE in the 2004 ICC Intercontinental Cup. He played the ACC Trophy that year, in addition to ACC Fast Track Countries Tournament matches against Singapore, the UAE and Hong Kong.
In February 2005 he played in the repechage tournament of the 2005 ICC Trophy, in which Nepal finished third after beating Qatar in a play-off. He also played ACC Fast Track Countries Tournament matches against Singapore, Malaysia, the UAE and Hong Kong. The games against the UAE and Hong Kong also counted towards the 2005 ICC Intercontinental Cup and are his final first-class matches to date.In March 2006 he played for Nepal in a play-off match against Namibia to decide the final spot in the 2006 ICC Intercontinental Cup. Needing an outright win to qualify, Nepal could only secure a draw after there was no play on the first day. This was followed by playing on a tour of Pakistan and in the ACC Trophy in Malaysia, before ACC Premier League matches against Hong Kong, UAE, Singapore and Malaysia. Binod was dropped from national team in early 2012 that was selected to play T20 World qualifier.
Das was successful to win the first international trophy — ACC U-19 Cup — for Nepal in 2001. Das also led Nepal to the U-19 World Cup Plate championship final in 2002 where they lost to Zimbabwe which featured players like Brendon Taylor and Tatenda Taibu. His major achievement as Skipper was to lift the ACC Premier League Three-Day Competition in 2006. In his 68, 50-over match, Das claimed 76 wickets. The most popular player in Nepal cricket, former skipper was felicitated with a car in a ceremony with a Car by CAN on 12th of August 2015. Minister for Youth and Sports Purushottam Paudel handed over the key of car on the occasion. Rs 3.8 million worth car was provided by CAN, MoYS and Chaudhary Group and the government exempted the tax of 247 percent.
Das says he was not so popular during his career as a player but now he has gained more. “I had a dream to do something for my family and get respect from the society. At current situation I have gained the respect and have achieved my childhood dream,” he said. “When I used to attend school I used to carry school bag along with cricket kits. The school bag used to feel heavy for me but the cricket kits were never heavy,” he added. “Cricket has paid me everything and the fame I got was from cricket.”Paras Khadka says “We have learnt many things from him and the level we are at current is because of his generation.”
Binod and Paras played for the same team "Nepal Blue" in the 63 overs tribute match for Late Phil Huges in Kirtipir where Binod led his team as a captain for the last time with his favourite jersey numbered 1. Binod Das is an ACC Level III certified coach.He coached the CAN-XI team during the Uttarakhand Gold Cup in Indiain 2013. He was appointed as an Assistant Coach of national team when the team was preparing for 2015 ICC World Cricket League Division Two. And nevertheless his hardwork for success in domestic venture of Wai Wai Everest Premier League as a tournament director builds more respect for him. Binod was one of the aspiring cricketers in associate region for his bowling excellence with Five Man of the Match Awards. With hard circumstances Binod Das served the country, contributed to Nepali Cricket and Lives Like a Legend.
