Kolkata Knight Riders biggest mistake, A Boon for Mumbai Indians

August 6, 2022 | Rahul Shriwastav

There aren't many players who are assets and can perform miracles if given the chance. By releasing a player like Surya Kumar Yadav, KKR made a mistake. MI benefitted from KKR's mistake by getting the chance to buy Surya Kumar for only 3.2 crores at the 2018 Mega Auction.

Surya Kumar was performing admirably for KKR, but they neglected to use him. He played the role of finisher for KKR as most of the time he used to bat down the order. He was therefore understated but had an influence. He might have easily served as the captain KKR was seeking to replace Gautam Gambhir.

Gambhir added that although Suryakumar didn't get many runs while playing for KKR, he was never utilized properly.

But When Mumbai bought him in the auction, Surya Kumar Yadav shined bright; for this sky, only sky was the limit.

Gautam Gambhir the former captain and teammate of Sky stated : "Releasing Suryakumar Yadav Was Kolkata Knight Riders' Biggest Loss". He also added, that not batting SKY at no.3 is his biggest regret as skipper. SKY is a player of a different class.

SKY Rise since he joins MI

Surya Kumar Yadav has taken IPL by storm after he joined MI in 2018. And it's no brainer to claim he is the Mumbai Indian best batsman by miles.

In the Indian Premier League, Suryakumar has distinguished himself over the years. SKY is the vital clog in the MI batting unit.

Someone's loss could be someone's massive gain. With Mumbai Indians, exactly that's what has happened. He was released by KKR and is currently a cornerstone in MI's batting order. He never looked back after joining MI.

Surya Kumar scored 512 runs and backed it up with 424 and 480 in the next two seasons

2020 shows differnt version of MI

It's always difficult for a player to make his own identity when he is surrounded by star players. The same happens with him. MI has big names like Rohit Sharma, Bumrah, QDK, Pollard, and Pandya and making his own identity needed something extra from Surya Kumar Yadav and he did the same. 2020 was probably the best season for this man.

He scored more than 400 runs for the third season in a row. He had his greatest season average averaging 40 and finished in the top ten in terms of runs scorers.

Throughout the season, Suryakumar also slammed four 50+ scores. His total of 61 fours continued to rank second behind Shikhar Dhawan (67).

Now, he is regarded as MI's best batsman even though there is Rohit Sharma.

Because of his extraordinary performance in IPL for consecutive years, he got his maiden call up and guess what he opened his international account with 6 in the very first ball of his career.

International calls and Dependency on him

SKY got called up to the squad and had a great start to his career. His lone heroic performance against England in the third T20I recently nearly ensured India's win from a position where it almost seemed impossible.

His remarkable T20I runs also help him to find his place in the ODI team.

Because of his consistent performance, SKY now holds the second spot in the ICC top 10 T20I batsman rating, barely two points behind Babar Azam. SKY still has two games left in the T20 series when he is playing in Wisconsin. SKY may have his eye on the top slot for sure. Not to mention that he recently played a match-winning knock on a challenging surface and was named Player of the Match in the most recent T20I against the West Indies.

Sky has now become one of the most dependable batters in the team and the T20 world cup is in line. Indian team and fans hoping similar kind of consistency from him. And we hope, he just deliver and helped India to rewrite the history after 2007 T20 WC.
